Today I’ll be talking all of the Harry Potter things. Unless you live under a nerd-free rock, you know that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child released this past Sunday, July 31. Sadly I was unable to attend any of the book release parties, but I did win a copy of the book thanks to my sweet Slytherin Instagramming skills, so there’s that.
Harry Potter and The Cursed Child Spoiler-Free Review
As soon as I got my book, I just sat down and started reading. This is a spoiler free review, btw, so no worries here. It took me a bit to get into the style of the book since it is a script and not a novel. I’m not used to reading plays and it took me back to reading Shakespeare in high school. The book itself doesn’t take long to read and can easily be accomplished in a few hours. I tried taking my time with the book, but I just had to know what happened.
There were many great moments in the script. We get to find out about Harry, Ron, Hermione, and some of the other main characters lives after The Battle at Hogwarts. I love knowing what they’re all up to and how their lives and characters have evolved. There were many great moments, some of which made me cry, but all in all, I enjoyed the story.
With that said, it did read to me more like fanfic than anything else and some things made me go REALLY??? I realize this is only a script and because of that I know I’m missing out on all of the stage magic that would make this feel like it belongs in JK’s world. However, it still didn’t quite feel like her either, which I’ll admit was a bit disappointing. Part of me wishes I had not read this and just saw the play (one day in the far far away future when I can get to London and have lots of cash flow), but there was no way I wasn’t going to pick up a copy and devour it. This book is said to be canon and so I will accept it as such, but I don’t know that we should consider it the 8th Harry Potter book, more like an extended epilogue or a really good supplement.
Hogwarts Fandom of the Month Club
Speaking of Harry Potter, my Hogwarts and Harry Potter Fandom of the Month Club box arrived just before the book came out. I made a video, but my Macbook is dying a slow and painful death and the audio didn’t line up with the video so I just scrapped it for this month. I really liked this box a lot. I thought the pieces were all fantastic and I’ve been rocking them all weekend long.
My favorite piece would have to be The Fat Lady necklace. It’s holographic and it’s just straight up awesome. The ring is really cool too as the FOTMC creator designed it herself. This box was definitely a good one.
Have you read Cursed Child yet? What did you think?
That’s like the best family photo compilation ever! Haha. Sadly I haven’t gotten my hands on a copy of the new book yet -what a bad fan. Lol. It’s on its way in the mail though. I’m looking forward to reading it!
Haha…it’s my favorite family photo as of yet! I hope you enjoy the book 🙂
I just finished the Cursed Child and I completely agree with you. It does feel more like fanfiction than actual canon. I did like it though! I really liked Albus and Scorpius and how Scorpius is very intellectual and not at all like his grandfather.
I really, really loved Scorpius 🙂
