As some of you know, I covered the Celebration of Harry Potter Expo at Universal Orlando this weekend. I can’t wait to share all of the details with you over on The Fairytale Traveler (I’ll be sure to post the link here) as it was simply amazing. One of my favorite parts of the expo was seeing how everyone was dressed. I saw the most amazing Snape as Neville’s grandmother, a Snitch, a seriously convincing Rita Skeeter, and so many more. I kept my outfits pretty low key on Friday and Sunday, but on Saturday I went full out in my Luna Lovegood cosplay.
This was my first time attempting any sort of cosplay and I’m so happy with how it turned out. I suppose I could’ve really gone all out and gotten a blonde wig, but I wanted to embrace a slightly spicy, brunette Luna for the day. The best part of the outfit, by far, was the skirt. I spent hours painting it and couldn’t believe the awesomeness of it when I was finished.
I was really nervous doing a painted skirt. I spent a lot of time trying to look on eBay for the actual Luna skirt and scoured for potential fabrics that were similar, but came up with nothing. When I finally decided to DIY, I happened to find the most perfect skirt in Marshall’s on clearance for $10 and knew that was my sign to buy it and get painting.
I found the stencil for the bird and unicorn (or is it a horse?) here. I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut it out onto paper (but you can use an X-acto knife to cut by hand) and sponge-painted the designs on the skirt. I used acrylic paint and had to do 3 coats before the painted items looked completely solid. I did all of the balloons, hearts, stars, and polka dots by hand…over and over and over 🙂 Let’s just say this baby was a labor of love, but was totally worth it.
Everything else was either purchased new, found at a thrift store, or made. I used these instructions to make my dirigible plum earrings and I found the pink blazer at Goodwill for $4. The blazer was WAY too small, which is what prompted me to search for, and thankfully find, that amazing Luna shirt. I also made my own Quibbler by doing an image search for the Quibbler, printing it, and Mod Podging it onto a notebook – I think it was the perfect finishing touch.

The best part about the entire outfit, aside from how fun it was wearing something so bright and happy, is that it was featured on Pottermore! I was trying to take a selfie in front of Honeydukes when someone from Pottermore asked if they could take my picture. They shared 47 pictures from the Celebration of Harry Potter event and my picture was one of them – I seriously cannot stop geeking out! I got a ton of compliments on my outfit all day long although at first I was so nervous to wear the outfit, I was confidently rocking it by the end of the day. I think for my first cosplay, it turned out to be perfect for me.

Squee – thanks! I definitely thought it would be easy, but had no clue painting a skirt would take so long lol
This outfit is super cute and you must be so proud of all the hard work you put into painting that skirt. Being featured on Pottermore is so cool! Are you inspired for more cosplay now?! Love the new blog header too!!
I do want to do more cosplay now. Not exactly sure what I want to be next, but I’m hoping to do a Newt Scamander look for the premier of Fantastic Beasts 🙂
Oh my gosh!! I love that idea!!
Love it and love how the glasses are in your site header/logo too!
Thanks! I just changed my header yesterday and I’m loving it – so much more fun than my previous one 🙂
