Today I’m letting someone else write here at From Girlie to Nerdy. I was contacted by Kristina asking to share about this absolutely amazing Star Wars runway fashion, and well, as a lover of Star Wars + fashion, how in the world could I say no to that? With that said, take it away Kristina…
The Force has awoken. The new Star Wars film has shattered every record in the box office and with good reason; the film more than lives up to the hype and it’s introducing countless new people to the franchise that has had a special place in many of our hearts. So when I saw Danielle was becoming a Jedi loving gal, I thought I’d give her another reason to blend her love of girlie and nerdy.
Fashion is a great way to enter the nerdy world; it can be subtle and minimalistic in its geekdom from t-shirts to accessories or over-the-top glamorous with full on complicated and detail oriented cosplay. And then there’s runway fashion. Wait, nerdy runway fashion? Yes, it exists, and not only does it exist, it’s fabulous.
Behold: the most glamorous Darth Vader this side of the galaxy. Designed by Indonesian fashion and accessories designer Alston Stephanus, this Louboutin wearing Sith rocked the runway at The Masterpiece Strikes Back, a Star Wars fashion show held by HighEnd magazine and LucasFilm. That’s right, LucasFilm hosted a Star Wars themed fashion show. In Jakarta no less! It wasn’t only the vintage-come-steampunk Vader that Alston brought to life either, C-3PO and R2D2 were glamming up the event as well, complete with matching clutches.
Alston is a lifetime Star Wars fan, so incorporating The Force into his work isn’t all that surprising, but is still nice to see, especially in high fashion. There are few things in the world that resonate as much as Star Wars does, and to see it stretch across the globe is wonderful. Alston Stephanus has recently moved to the United States, but he’s a staple in the South East Asian fashion world. His company, Alston Stephanus Accessories, recently celebrated its ten year anniversary. To further credit his work, he’s been featured in Vogue Italia, Le Mariage, and Nakedbutsafe… just to name a few. From haute couture to whimsical headpieces, Alston’s work may not immediately scream geeky, but that’s why when he does put his talents to nerdy work, it’s genuine.
While many Star Wars enthusiasts prefer to ignore the prequels, there’s no ignoring Alston’s Indonesian fusion Queen Amidala outfit that was designed for Disney’s D23 Mousequerade where it successfully became a finalist in the Best of Star Wars category.
Alston’s Star Wars love doesn’t end on the runway though. His interests continue on towards cosplay and this past San Diego Comic Con he created and wore an R2D2/MegaMan mashup that would make any nerd proud.
Seriously you guys – how amazing are these outfits and accessories?!?! Which one do you like best?
