My name is Danielle and space is not my final frontier. Amongst the many “nerdy” things I was surrounded by growing up, Star Trek was the big one. I can still remember hanging out with my dad while he watched it and eye rolling/pretending not to be interested, yet occasionally getting sucked into whatever was going on. Years beyond that, I met my now husband, another Trekie and lover of all things space and any and all terrible Sci-Fi movies. Most of my friends identify with nerdy culture as well and were shocked (and quite possibly a little disgusted) that I knew absolutely nothing about Star Wars aside from the “second” movie of the new series that I was dragged to see in theaters by my parents. Only seeing the new movies and not even all of them is apparently blasphemy in the Star Wars world. Who knew?
Now I have a son that is starting to fall in love with all things nerd. Marvel super heroes are, obviously, the best and it appears that a love of space, despite knowing nothing about it, is written into his DNA. At age 3, he claims R2D2 is the coolest ever, and yet he has at most seen an episode or two of Star Wars rebels – which as far as I know doesn’t feature R2D2. Although he’s not a nerd yet, I know it’s coming.
This year, upon turning the magical and slightly frightening age of 30, I decided it was time to explore my surroundings and stick my toe into the waters of geekdom. Thus begins my journey. I plan to watch the movies, play some video games, read a few comics, and maybe engage in a little cosplay – all while blogging my adventures here. This uncharted world is my oyster to explore, so let the games begin.
